Our group (Adrienne Wittenauer, Mary Lack, and myself) have started looking into Christian Care in Rock Island. This organization has two centers, one for domestic abuse of women and children and the other is a rescue mission for homeless men. Christian Care supplies meals, shelter, and other resources to these people that are involved.
We are planning on donating our time to get involved. We all think it would be a great opportunity to work with these people and just provide various things for them. Looking through the list of different objectives of volunteers, it is evident that we would have to narrow it down to a few to choose from. The ones that stick out to me are the following: providing childcare, prepare and serve a meal, answer phones, help with pick ups during food drives, and work on projects such as painting and spring cleaning. This is showing that we have a variety to choose from and it also shows that they need help in multiple areas.

Blog #1: Topic Discussion
Three of the topics we discussed that I am interested in are teen pregnancy, bullying, and eating disorders (including overeating).
Teen pregnancy is something very near and dear to me. My mother had me as a teenager and so did a few of my friends mothers. Because of this, it is very important to me that this is put to an end. No girl goes through life thinking "oh! I am going to have a baby when I am 17 years old, it is going to be the best thing!" No. Girls hope to have a good future for themselves and their future children. Having a child during your teenage years doesn't necessarily destroy your life or future, but you do not have the chance to follow through with your college and future plans like you had intended before. On the flip side of this, everybody says that having a baby at a young age ruins your life and that you will not be able to provide for your baby. This is not true. A teenage couple could very easily get their life put together fast enough to have everything for their child that they need. I agree that students are not taught about sex-education at an early enough age. As for Orion, we are taught in our sophomore year of high school. To be quite honest, most students, if they are going to have sex in high school, have already done it by then. Another issue with sex education is that we are always taught to be abstinent. Being abstinent is great and all but you have to face the facts that it is going to happen if the teenager wants it to happen. Teaching safe sex would be the better route in keeping kids safe when it comes to this.
As for bullying, I think it is talked about too much, but it is still something that needs to be recognized as a needed change. At Orion, we already have our "Be Fierce" campaign, which is great and all, but studies show that high schools that have a no bullying campaign are more likely to have bullying go on. This is caused by the campaign giving the bullies ideas of what to do to their victim. Bullying needs to be put to an end, but I do not believe that anyone has approached the issue the right way. Victims of bullying need to know that they can talk to adults about their issues and they need to know that they are not alone in this. They do not have to fight against the bullying alone. Telling one adult can do so much for your case and that way people will know what to look for. Another thing that needs to happen is people need to know that it is acceptable for them to tell a bully to stop doing something to another kid.
Eating disorders. Oh boy. This is an outrageous thing to even think about. Social media, I believe, has a major role in this issue. Girls (mainly) look at models and famous people and think that they absolutely have to look like them in order to be beautiful. The truth is, everyone is beautiful in their own way. You do not have to be stick thin to be beautiful. Eating healthy is one way to lose weight, if you so believe that you are not skinny enough. Binge eating or not eating at all is not the answer to losing weight, this will just cause you to be overly unhealthy. Girls need to know that being healthy is what you want, not to be absolutely skinny to the bone.
